Neither evening study nor part-time courses have stopped Birkbeck’s students from creating and running around 60 clubs, societies, working/representative committees and activity groups that - with the union’s support - collectively create hundreds of classes, talks, workshops, trips and events for students each year!
From Bowling to Biology we have societies to suit every taste, and if there’s an area where you think we’re lacking, you can create your own!
Becoming a Member
Joining clubs and societies is a great way to supplement your academic experience with extra information, new skills, and networking opportunities; you can also explore extra-curricular interests, enjoy yourself while you keep fit, make new friends and have a lot of fun…
Membership to all clubs and societies is open to all Birkbeck students. In some cases you may need to “audition” (for example: competing activities) to play an active role, but in most cases it’s as simple as signing up through the group's SU page.
Membership fees usually apply, funds are secured by the SU and are always used to help with the running costs of the society you signed up for. Visit the society funding page.
Join a Committee
At the core of every one of our student groups is a committee of dedicated students who plan, promote and execute events and activities for members. If there’s a subject you’re passionate about, or if you’d just like to become more involved, joining a committee is an excellent opportunity to perfect your planning, fundraising, budgeting, marketing and/or leadership skills.
Every club must hold an AGM each year where all students & faculty members can attend and any member can run to be elected by members for any of the committee positions. AGMs are usually in the summer term
Union Activites & Events
The SU also holds events that are open to all students, from the Fresher's Fayre right through to end of year socials. Make sure you keep an eye on our events calendar to see what's coming up & register your interest. Alternatively follow us on twitter or join the FB group for updates!
