Submitting Mitigating Circumstances
Submitting Mitigating Circumstances is defined by a student being affected by unforeseen circumstances which effected your performance in an assessment. The reason why you would submit mitigating circumstances is if you feel that you were significantly disrupted by circumstances that were out of your control.
When you should submit a mitigating circumstance:
A late submission or non-submission of an assessment
Non-attendance of examination
Poor performance in assessment (caused by individual or external factors)
Please be aware that you cannot ask for a remark on your work. Mitigating Circumstances only apply when there are unforeseen circumstances that affected your performance in an assessment.
Reasons for submitting mitigating circumstances:

Family related emergency
Flare up of an existing medical condition
Short term conditions
Any unforeseen circumstance mentioned in your MitCircs claim has to be around the time of the assessment.
Deadline of mitigating circumstance submission:
Two weeks after the assessment date. However, you are better of submitting MC’s within 7 days.
Late submission of assessment:
If you submit an assessment up to 7 days date, you will receive a ‘late penalty mark’ and ‘your real mark’ with a 10% deduction; It your MitCirs is accepted, you will receive the latter.
If between 7-14 days after the assessment deadline you submit your work, you will receive a late penalty mark to the level pass threshold: UG: 40% & PG: 50%
If you do not submit work or claim:
You will be capped for the following assessment opportunity. Capped means that you will not be awarded any higher than the allocated capped mark: UG: 40% & PG: 50%
Submitting mitigating circumstance claims linked to Covid-19:
1) No documentary evidence is required for any claims. Please ignore reference to this in sections 11, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 26 of the MitCircs policy.
2) The addition of the following examples as acceptable grounds for claims:
• Bereavement due to COVID-19.
• Hospitalised due to contracting COVID-19.
• Ill at home due to having COVID-19-like symptoms.
• Financial impact due to loss of work.
• Difficulties in completing work because of limited access to a computer,
internet and/or quiet study space.
• Home-schooling or caring for children/getting shopping/caring for
• Taking on extra work in employment to cover staff absences/ extra
shifts as a key worker.
• Deterioration of existing mental ill health conditions or development of

Accepted claims non-related to Covid-19:
For a claim to be accepted a student must produce independent documentary evidence to show that the circumstances are:
Have detrimentally affected their performance your performance/ submission/ attendance in assessment or will do so;
Were unforeseen (not already known)
Were out of your control and could not have been prevented
Relate directly to the timing of the assessment affected
