Birkbeck Students' Union Elections 2020

Make a difference - to Birkbeck

Birkbeck Students' Union is a democratic, student-centred charity at the heart of Birkbeck life.

We're here to make studying at Birkbeck the best it can be.

We do this in a range of ways, such as:

  • Supporting a range of social and sporting activities - everything from investment to tabletop gaming
  • Campaigning and lobbying on issues important to our members, such as LGBTQ+ rights, accessibility for disabled students, and more
  • Giving impartial, professional advice to students facing academic difficulties, through our Advice Centre
  • Helping Birkbeck maintain the quality of its education via our network of Academic Representatives

We're led by a new generation of student leaders and officers every year, chosen by the entire student body. Any Birkbeck student can put themselves forward.

Will it be you?

Designed for you.

We're led by students just like you - working alongside their studies to improve the experiences and opportunities of fellow students.

Our roles are designed for Birkbeck students.

They're part-time and paid, with flexible hours and the ability to fit around your studies and home life.

All of our officers are supported by our staff team, and we'll provide you office space, equipment, and all the coffee you need.

Here's what you need to know:

  • All paid roles are London Living Wage, £10.75 an hour
  • The two Student Leader roles are an average of 21 hours a week
  • The following roles are an average of 9 hours a week:
    • Black Students' Officer
    • Disabled Students' Officer
    • LGBTQ+ Officer
    • Trans Officer
    • Women's Officer
  • The following roles are unpaid, and have a lower time commitment:
    • NUS Delegate
    • Ethics & Environment Officer
    • History, Classics & Archaeology Academic Representative

Make a difference - to yourself.

We know that people come to Birkbeck to achieve their ambitions through education and experience. Here at Birkbeck Students' Union, we're the same.

Our paid Leaders and Officers can sharpen their personal & professional skills in a number of ways. Working with us will give you real-life experience of:

  • Leadership
  • Campaigning & lobbying
  • Volunteer management
  • Organisational strategy
  • Financial planning

Students elected to paid roles automatically become members of our Trustee Board* as well, giving them a rare insight into the strategy and operations of a complex charity.
