NOMINEES

BEST DISSERTATION PROJECT SUPERVISOR

GRACE HALDEN

“Grace supervised my MA dissertation in Contemporary Literature and Culture. She was flexible, adapting her approach to what suited me, rather than following the prescriptive approach of the department. We had 4 shorter supervision sessions rather than the 3 x 1 hours which allowed me time to develop my ideas and respond to feedback much more organically. She gave up her time to closely critique my introduction and wasn’t disheartened when I ended up scrapping it and rewriting it later as my work developed and evolved. She was so encouraging, helping me to see that I was capable of doing what I’d set out to achieve and at no point did she make me feel my very disjointed thoughts were invalid or stupid or try to impose on me how I ought to steer my argument. The result was an outstanding piece of work that I have never bettered, and winning the class prize. I want to dedicate my prize to her for her amazing support, which wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.”

COURSE REP OF THE YEAR

STACEY-LEIGH DOLAN

"Stacey-Leigh has been an exemplary LLM student rep; just amazing. She took over the role in January and even prior to this was the linchpin for our first year group, co-ordinating communication between us all via study groups and social meetings. There have been so many moving pieces for her: the complexities of remote learning and highly sensitive issues have arisen that she has voiced and purused through relevant channels in an assured and determined manner. Stacey-Leigh has worked tirelessly for us, I hope she knows how very grateful we are; this award would be a further means by which to thank her."

BEST PERSONAL TUTOR

MIKE BINTLEY

“Mike Bintley deserves this award as I believe he is a great and irreplaceable asset to the Birkbeck community. He has helped inspire me to push myself to do better in my studies by offering me fantastic advice, as well as ideas approaching my degree. Mike has been a rock with my online learning throughout this terrible pandemic, he has not only been there for me regarding my course but has always been supportive by uplifting me throughout this stressful time regarding the pandemic and other personal matters whilst always maintaining a level of professionalism. Through my whole time as a student at Birkbeck Mike has been my number one reliable source if I have any issues or questions, I know I can count on him whether that will be to do with student finance, my course or any other general query - I can guarantee not only a quick response via email but he always tends to go the extra mile to get things sorted out promptly! Mike has been consistent with helping my student needs and has always made me feel that he is just an email away if and when I may need him. Not only is Mike Bintley an overall inspiration but he is also my hero! (a little side note: he deserves both a standing ovation and a raise.)"

EVENT OF THE YEAR

JENNY LINDVALL (ENVIRO SOCIETY: CITIZEN'S ASSEMBLY)

"Jenny collaborated with XR and Citizen's Assembly to run a really great event, brining together a lot of moving parts and hit some real issues. It was enjoyed by many students, and its marketing, planning and content was first class. In a year that it has been incredibly difficult for our Clubs and Societies to meet as they would like to, to engage with as many students as they would usually and run the events kind of events that they might want to, it's been incredible to see how Jenny, and the Enviro Society, managed to tackle the digital environment to run this event, which impacted so many of our students throughout."

BEST NON-TEACHING STAFF MEMBER

ADAM WHITTOCK

“He continues to support PhD students, make sure that we get the help that we need, and answers all the frivolous and serious questions we have. If he doesn't know the answer, he makes sure to find out for us and to keep us updated in the meantime.”

“Adam is an incredible source of knowledge and support for all things PhD in HCA. You can email him with any query and he will reply very promptly, knowledgeably and with good cheer, no matter how trivial and even if it's something you could reasonably find out/ sort out yourself. I have always thought this but this year I have had particular personal experience of his willingness to help and support us. In September he spent quite some time getting to the bottom of a registration problem I had and sorting it over several days going between different departments for me. It was really above and beyond what I could have expected. Then in December he sorted out a break in studies for me. It was not just the practical efficiency with which he did this (which was brilliant enough) but the personal way he responded to my circumstances with really exceptional tact, sensitivity and kindness. I have oddly never met him in person but have enormous respect for him and think he is an extraordinary asset to HCA PhD students and the department more widely. I would love for him to receive recognition in gratitude for all he does and the 'extra mile' he always goes for us.”

“Adam works tirelessly for the HCA PhD community. He is so helpful, kind, and hardworking and my PhD would have been so much more difficult without his support and assistance. Thank you for all you do!”

“Adam is the Admissions, CertHE & MPhil/PhD Administrator for the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, he has been an absolute rock during the last year, keeping all the PhDs in touch with the department and making sure all our admin works smoothly in the digital world we now inhabit. No small query is too much trouble for him and he will go to great lengths to track down information that is not obvious from the Moodle system. He has made this year much easier than it might have been.”

COLLEAGUE OF THE YEAR (STAFF VOTE)

CHAN MUU

“The lockdown has been tough for everybody, staff and students, and Chan has done more than anyone else to hold us together, supporting the students, working incredibly long hours while isolated and with her own caring responsibilities at home. A true hero.”

“The BA Psychosocial Studies would not be able to function without Chan. She is the point of call for both students and staff, always on the ball and a lovely person to work with. Chan so deserves to be recognised for all the work she does!”

BEST LECTURER/SEMINAR TEACHER

OSCAR SALGADO SUAREZ

“Dr Salgado Suarez has been an outstanding lecturer and seminar leader. During this academic year, I have been suffering with my chronic illnesses, and Dr Salgado Suarez has been profoundly patient and understanding with me for the two modules he has taught me. He went out of his way during holiday and personal time to support me with overdue assignments, providing sage guidance and reassuring me each step of the way that I was on the correct track, despite my health situation. I have never experienced this level of personalised support from a lecturer before (and the standard among the staff at Birkbeck has always been high!) Given the circumstances our community finds itself in with the pandemic, Dr Salgado Suarez's patience and enthusiasm are part of the reason I am completing my degree at all this year, and why I still enjoy academia. I am truly grateful for his support.”

“Dr Oscar's lectures have always been interactive and enjoyable. His lectures are what university is about. Creating and forming an interest in student's minds. I can most definitely tell that Oscar cares for our education and he is one of the best lecturers I have ever encountered. He most definitely deserves this award.”

STEVE HIRONS

“The quality of his teaching and in depth knowledge of the subject being taught. The great care, concern and assistance he has given me especially with the many IT issues I have experienced and his real concern for the welfare and academic progress of the students attending his lectures.”

“Steve is the most patient, non-judgmental and helpful lecturer. He is passionate about the subject he teaches and is always willing to help without judgment when you need help with something. He creates a safe and open space for learning in his lectures and is always encouraging students to believe in themselves.”

“Steve deserves this award because he always goes above and beyond, he bends over backwards to help his students. He is the one professor on the course that you can go to when you have any problem. I would not be still on my course if it wasn't for him. He took time out to go through any issue I had, to make sure I understood what I had to do. He never gets any recognition that he deserves!!!!!!!!”

“Steve is giving 110% and even more to students. He is always there to assist us. He is making learning a great experience. He is a fantastic teacher and a great human being”

“Steve is a big part of the earth science department always ready to help and give the best advice when needed. He is the one who cares about the knowledge and he is ready to support student interests when appropriate. He is the person who gives you that necessary human touch even in these tough times. Steve is a precious BBK diamond”

“He deserves recognition.”

“Best lecturer I've had. Top notch. Goes above and beyond for students. Real passion for the subject.”

STUDENT GROUP OF THE YEAR

WOMENS' NETWORK

"In a year where clubs and societies have naturally struggled in comparison to usual, the Womens' Network has been a shining light in what has been a dark year for many people. Led by the incredible Naomi Smith, the group has been consistently delivering events throughout the year and engaging with both it's own members and as much of the wider community as possible. Leading on it's own events such as the Book Club, quizzes, unique symposiums, meetings and a brilliant series highlighting 'Women at Birkbeck', as well as collaborating with others to create high-quality content for everyone to enjoy. This amongst many other things is why the Womens' Network deserves Student Group of the Year!"

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE BIRKBECK EXPERIENCE

FILIPE MARTINS

“Filipe was my group tutor on L&D first term at BBK, where I was quite confused on how to tackle the course and even more the exams. He was so supportive, always made the time to be available to answer questions after class and guide me on how to approach studying. He understood my struggles as a dyslexic student, promoted my self-confidence, enhanced the way I expressed my views through being more critical and trust how I process knowledge rather than doubt it. All of that was delivered in a very subtle and smooth way which was so encouraging and refreshing. Second term, I was extremely lucky to have him as a module convener and seminar tutor, he dedicated half a session to check on all the seminar students individually, how we were doing during such a lockdown and what sort of support we might need. He is an amazing empathetic person, and I can only imagine how different my journey studying Msc could have been without his wonderful influence and encouragement.”

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO THE BIRKBECK COMMUNITY

LILY GUIMARES

"Aline,or Lily as we all know has been a great support not just for me but for lots of others students. She has organised revision sessions and worked around everyone’s availability by sacrificing her time. Lily is an outstanding person who taught me not to give up but to believe in me. Lily deserves to be commended for her kindness and support"
