The Student Union Autumn Elections are just around the corner, offering you the opportunity to make a real difference at Birkbeck. Whether you’re passionate about improving student life, representing your peers, or driving positive change, now is the time to step up and lead!


How to Nominate Yourself

1. Log in to the Birkbeck Student Union website with Your Student Account

Click “Log In” in the top right-hand corner and sign in using your Birkbeck student email and password.

 

2. Choose the Role You Want to Nominate For

Scroll through the list of available positions (e.g. Student Head of Faculty, Parliament Member, etc.) and click the “Nominate Yourself” button next to the role you’re interested in.

 

3. Complete the Nomination Form

Fill in the required details, including:

Your full name and contact information

A short personal statement (why you're running, what you hope to achieve)

A manifesto (max 300 words)

 

4. Submit Your Nomination

After completing the form, hit “Submit”. You should receive an email confirmation that your nomination has been received.

 

5. Wait for Approval

Your nomination will be reviewed by the SU team. If anything is missing or needs changing, they will contact you. Once approved, your name will appear on the elections page under the position you’re running for.

Academic Rep:

  • Influence decisions on your course and improve the student experience.
  • Build confidence in communication, leadership, and problem-solving.
  • Stand out to employers and future study programmes.
  • Build strong relationships with academics and university staff.
  • Full training and guidance provided by the Students’ Union.
  • Represent and support your peers across your department.
  • Opportunities for awards and leadership development.

 

Student Head of Faculty:

  • Shape faculty-wide improvements and represent hundreds of students.
  • Develop high-level skills in chairing meetings, mentoring reps, and strategic thinking.
  • Sit on faculty boards and work directly with senior academic staff.
  • Stand out with advanced experience in governance and student advocacy.
  • Connect with university leaders, SU officers, and other student reps.
  • Supported by the Students’ Union every step of the way.
  • Opportunities for awards, references, and further leadership roles.

 

Student Parliament:

  • Vote on key decisions that affect students across Birkbeck.
  • Bring the concerns and ideas of your community to the centre of decision-making.
  • Take part in structured discussions and motions.
  • Gain experience in democratic processes, governance, and leadership.
  • Collaborate with Officers, Reps, and society leaders across the SU.
  • Influence how the SU supports students, campaigns, and allocates resources.
  • Guidance provided by SU staff.
