Hello Birkbeck student community,
Reading week is here (for most of us), and you’ve made it through the first half of term - well done! Whether you’re new or returning, settling back into the Birkbeck rhythm is an achievement. As the days get darker and colder, it can be harder to stay motivated, but the Birkbeck Students’ Union is here to support you. Our doors are always open if you need advice, a chat, or just a friendly space.
I’ve been working on several projects from my manifesto and am excited to share that Estates has approved our first trial study pod, coming to campus soon, thank you to everyone who filled out the questionnaire! We’ll be asking for your feedback once it’s in use. Alongside my fellow officers, I’m also developing plans for a student drop-in space to relax, chat, and recharge, more on that next term.
I recently recorded a new SU podcast episode with the amazing Library team, who go above and beyond to support students every day. Please give it a listen when it’s released—and don’t hesitate to say hello to our library staff next time you’re in.
We’re also planning some exciting events and talks, including a Nutcracker ballet trip in early spring term and a business and tech talk featuring a young tech founder.
One of my highlights has been helping launch the first Birkbeck SU Poetry Competition, judged by writer Kate Rowland and Birkbeck’s own Stephen Wiley. It’s open to all students—on campus or online—with no set theme, so let your creativity flow! All entries will feature in a student poetry anthology.
Finally, Wobble Week is kicking off from the 10-14th November, led by your Welfare Officer Stephen, with events to help you stay on track and look after your wellbeing. Remember, no one has all the answers—we’re all just doing our best, one step at a time. Keep going, we believe in you.
