Do you have a passion for poetry? Whether you’re studying on campus, remotely, or balancing study with work and life commitments, this is your chance to be part of a creative community at Birkbeck.

What should you write?

The Birkbeck Students' Union Poetry Compeition invites students from all schools and courses to submit poems of any theme or genre. From free verse to sonnets, haikus to spoken word - every style is welcome.

How to submit your entry?

  • Please submit only one poem per candidate
  • Submit it as a PDF file
  • Send your submission to SU-Education@bbk.ac.uk

Who will decide on the winners?

All entries will be judged by professional BBC writer Kate Rowland and Stephen Willey, a creative writing lecturer. Selected poems will be published in a special Birkbeck SU online anthology, celebrating the voices and lived experiences of our diverse student community.

Poetry is a powerful way to express who we are and how we experience the world. This competition is a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow students and share your unique perspective—no matter where or how you study.

🎉  Prizes will be awarded for the top three entires, with special recognition for the best Undergraduate and Postgraduate submissions. The winners will be announced in December 2025, and the winning poems will be displayed on our website.

📅 Deadline for submissions: 28 November 2025

Be part of this exciting community project, giving voices to our students through creativity and expression.

10:56am on 7 Nov 25 Hi, this is very exciting. Is there any upper limit on number of lines? For example no more than 40 lines etc? How many poems can one individual submit? PS: there is a typo in this announcement 'Union Poetry Compeition' that might be worth fixing. Thanks!
