Blue design with text Leaving NUS Uk

Dear National Union of Students, Birkbeck Students’ Union conducted a referendum from 13th-17th November 2023, regarding NUS (UK) membership. The Students ‘ Union's reasons for running a referendum were firstly, to give our students the chance to have their voices heard in regard to NUS (UK) membership. Secondly, our elected officers past and present feel they haven’t been seen by NUS and our financial obligation and outcome to NUS (UK) have been brought into question many times. We currently do not feel that NUS (UK) has a strong enough focus on unique student demographics like Birkbeck nor have they shown an active interest until the referendum was called. For these reasons and others, students have voted to leave NUS (UK). The results are as follows: ·53% Leave ·44% Stay ·3% Abstain We are writing to you, to confirm that we are officially giving notice of our leaving NUS (UK). For now, we will be remaining part of the NUS charity. This outcome is met with slight sadness due to the long history Birkbeck Students’ Union has with NUS, being one of the seven founding members. We appreciate the hard work our NUS delegates have put into national campaigns over the years. However, our students have spoken and regardless of our history with NUS (UK), our current affiliation is not fit for purpose for Birkbeck Students. We will continue to try to get Birkbeck Students’ voices heard through NUS until our notice period ends in which we will look to new ways to represent our students nationally. We wish NUS (UK) all the best for the future and we hope that one day NUS will be able to grow the benefits for smaller Students’ Unions and represent Birkbeck Students more effectively nationally. Yours Sincerely, Birkbeck Students’ Union
