Hello and a warm welcome to Birkbeck! I’m Hattie, your new Education Sabbatical Officer and a final-year student here. I’m excited to support you during your studies and help make your time at Birkbeck a positive and enriching experience.

Birkbeck is unique in its inclusivity, diversity, and vibrant community. Our students come from many different backgrounds—some straight from school, others returning after a break, or combining study with work and family life. However you’re studying, online or on campus, I’m here to listen, support, and champion you. My email is always open.

As you begin this journey, remember it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. You wouldn’t be here if Birkbeck didn’t believe in your potential. There is lots of support available, from peer mentoring and student buddies to professional counselling through the Wellbeing Service. You’ll also be assigned a personal tutor—if you’re unsure who this is, reach out to your programme team or the SU. Building good communication early will really help.

I recommend visiting the library in your first week—the staff are brilliant, and study skills support is available online and in person. If you have a disability or mental health condition, our Disability team can help set up a study support plan and connect you with extra resources.

Birkbeck is based in the heart of London, surrounded by world-class museums, theatres, and green spaces. This year, the SU will host trips to the theatre, ballet, and British Museum, giving you opportunities to connect with other students and learn in new ways. We also have a wide range of societies and sports clubs you can join.

Most importantly, look after yourself. Take breaks, enjoy the parks nearby, and give yourself credit for taking this big step—you’ve already achieved something huge by enrolling.

I have faith in you, and I hope you’ll make the most of all that Birkbeck and London have to offer. Please say hello if you see me around campus—I’d love to hear from you.

Good luck,
Hattie Robin Brock
