  • Birkbeck Film Society Screening: The Elephant Man (1980)

Starring an Oscar nominated John Hurt, alongside a host of legendary actors from the mid to late 20th century including Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft and John Gielgud; the film follows Merrick as he finds himself reintegrated into society by a surgeon who treats his physical and psychological wounds. With scenes of an upsetting nature, moderate threat and injury detail; The Elephant Man isn't for the faintest of hearts. But through the compassionate nature of David Lynch's storytelling, the film is a wonderfully emotional crowdpleaser with an important and universal message on how we treat others, how we ought to be treated and the inner beauty that lies within us.

Our screening of The Elephant Man (1980) will take place shortly after 6.30pm on Friday the 15th of May in MAL B35 (Room 35 on the basement level of the Birkbeck Main Building on Malet Street). Tickets are free and both current students and alumni are welcome.
